Match: Old Doms won by 5 runs | |||||||||||||||||
Well the Doms managed to get eleven players on the field, although one player selected never turned up so an injured Last gladly stepped up to the mark and played what is his 499th game for the Doms. Steve Martin took on the captaincy for the first time and as you will read managed to pull off and exciting 5 run win.
Whitehill were the visitors from Barnt Green. They lost the toss and the Doms elected to bat first on a sunny but windy evening down at the Hedges ground. The ground was looking a picture thanks to the sterling efforts of the groundsmen and the new fence was in place.
The Doms got off to a poor start when a hobbling Pedders holed out for 2 runs and skipper Martin perished as in the fourth over when he found himself at the same end as Collins. Doms struggling on 17-2 off 4 overs.
With Banners now at the crease with Collins the pair set about building a stronger platform. Banners taking runs off everyone of his first 13 balls and Collins finding the boundary with ease pushed the score onto 50 in 8th over before Collins was caught for a 27 ball 32.
Ben Smith joined Banners and the pair set about the visitors bowling building the best partnership (91 runs) of the game before Banners was caught for a 27 ball 49. Smith then followed with the score still on 141. Dwyer and Manoj added a few more before the Doms 20 overs concluded with the the score on 155-6. Sadly Banners pulled 'something' and failed to appear for the second half of the match.
Skipper Martin deprived of his three main bowlers Pedders, Last and Banners through injury looked for players to stand up and be counted with the ball. Mark Hunt, with a cameo appearance bowled uphill and Blackmore the easier route downhill. The Whitehill lads had loaded the top order with big hitters and came out doing just that. But the plan faltered when Jimmy drove to Martin off Blackmore and the visitors first wicket was down in the 4th over with the score on 29.
Martin mixed up his bowlers and but wickets were hard to come by with Shaun belting the ball around the park. Collins chipped in with 2 wickets and Davidge claiming the prized scalp of opener Shaun when he bowled him for 60.
The Doms thought that was it as the visitors fell below the run rate needed to overtake the Doms 155 but Andy and Warmington changed the face of the game with some good boundary shots. But wickets were now falling and with 14 needed off the last over from Manoj only 9 were gained and the Doms won a thriller by 5 runs.
A good performance all round by the Doms with some very good catches, pick of the bowlers was Blackmore for his 12-3. One further historical moment was when Dave Collins rattled a ball into the new boundary fencing for the first time in the fences history. I'm sure a blue plaque will be erected in his honor..
Player of the Match: Blackmore for his 12-3 but Banners and Smith ran him close.
