Middle of April, and the sun was shining, outfield was lush and like lightning, surely a run fest was to be had on the top pitch!!
how wrong can you be!
The Doms had 17 players to choose their match day squad for the
2017 opener, but by the time play had been called we were
scratching around for our 11th player. Stalwart club captain
Pedro donned his whites quicker than he bowls to step in
temporarily for M Brookes who had forgotten his boots (surely a
sign that Pedro is reluctant to give up his love affair with
Dom, don't tell Mrs Pedro).
Having 2 of the Bromsgrove ground staff in the Dom's ranks was
undoubtedly going to work in our favour as the Dom's bowled
first. D Brookes was the first to strike in the third over
quickly followed by Srini in the fourth. By over 5 the visitors
had scrambled to 20-3. By drinks Coftonians were rocking at
88-5, M Banham joining in on the act with a Lasty-like long hop
grabbing a scalp.
Then a good partnership between Shahid and Afsar looked like the putting the visitors in command. However more fine bowling and fielding (notable good takes from Banham in the deep and Morris at slip) saw Coftonians limp to 155 all out by tea. Some good figures including D Brookes 3-18, R Pedley 2-10 and M Brookes 2-7.
Now if only we could guarantee a tea like this every Sunday
throughout the summer all arguments about Quiche would pale into
insignificance. A fine tea performance including hot sausage
rolls, non weird cheese sandwiches and of course Mrs Banham was
back to her best with Rocky Roads and a strawberry concoction
that was bowling the crowd over.
It was widely believed that the opening pair could knock these
off within 20 overs but when reigning Batsmen of the year C
Adams was pointed to the pavilion by quick finger Banham things
looked bleak. A fine knock of 45 from Pedley followed but when
he produced a leading edge the same thoughts went through every
Dom's mind. The dreaded collapse!!!
With the dreaded sniper putting paid to Tank's afternoon after
only 5 balls, a thoroughly miserable second half to the game was
On to next week!!
Playerof the match - Pedley for a fine knock and better figures than Banham!!
Dropped catches - C Adams 1, Hodgy 1
