|Match: Old Doms won by 4 wickets|
The Doms have never had a Fred playing for them and today against Clent CC down on the Hedges ground two turn up! Fred Stephenson and a much younger Fred Fallows were the Fred trail blazers in our second game of the season against the nice chaps from Clent CC.
The Doms had managed to get 11 players for the match so skipper Hickin could relax a bit. The Clent skipper called wrongly and therefore Dolly Hickin was claiming that he won the toss and decided to put the visitors in on a drying strip.
Hodgy playing his first game for what seems a lifetime opened the bowling, uphill, the first time he's turned his arm over for a couple of seasons. His first over was a rust bucket of deliveries but amazingly it only went for 3 runs.
The much older Fred took the second over downhill and his pace certainly unsettled the openers. The openers provided a circumspect first 5 overs eeking out just 12 runs but in the 6th over Hodgy had Khan trapped in front and off he walked for 9 runs.
In the very next over the much older Fred removed the other opener Bishop when Hunt caught an easy soft shot to square leg. The Clent boys were stuttering on 2-20 off 7overs.
Hodgy got a second bowling Ali before he was rested after a competent return of 2-19 off his 8 overs. Perry replaced the much old Fred down hill and Last took the uphill next set of overs. With Last's very first ball Wally slapped straight waist height to Hunt standing at square leg. Hunt shimmied sideways to let the ball pass him to the boundary. Hunt later revealed he was going on holiday and didn't want to hurt his hand!
Last got his first wicket in his second over as Law chipped, but not high enough as Hodgy stretched out an arm at point and held onto a smart catch. Clent 4-56 in the 19th. The score moved on the 81 in the 25th over when Last got one to move away from Wally and was easily caught at first slip for Morris's first catch out of three in the match. Clent 5-81.
Hunt and the much younger Fred were left to bowl the last overs, Hunt enticed Homer to play on for 3 then Morris took another 2 catches off the same bowler as the visitors continued to struggle against very tight bowling and fielding attack.
A run out executed by the much younger Fred saw Lee walking back to the pavilion and the same player got his first Old Doms wicket when he bowled Parks for 1.
The Doms had won the first half of the game by bowling out Clent for 118, nothing wrong with the wicket just a very good all round performance in the field and with the ball.
Tea was taken.
So 119 to win and Hickin and Davidge set off at a very circumspect rate taking 6 over to get 16 runs. skipper Hickin was first to go, playing back to Law and was given out LBW by the umpire. Doms 1-16.
The run rate continued as Procter settled in to the pace of the wicket. At times paint drying would have been more interesting as the odd run here and there were gleaned as the overs ticked by. The score had moved on to 56 in the 16th over before Davidge was caught for a studious 16.
Wright came in and knocked his first two balls faced for 4's before the Doms supporters hit the panic button as Wrights dismissal for a 9 ball 10 sparked a mini collapse as Hodgy first ball and Perry third ball for 2 were bowled by Foxall. The Doms wobbling on 5-64 in 22.
While all this carnage was going on Procter was playing sensibly, all he needed was another batsman to stay with him to get the Doms over the line.
In strides the much younger Fred Fallows and the game was won and he and Procter took the bowling apart playing proper cricket shots all around the ground. It took them only 7 overs to get the Doms to the brink of winning when Fallows for the first time lazily lifted the ball to mid off to be caught for a 29 ball 37. Top knock and a great piece batting with Procter who ended up with a solid chanceless 34no.
The Doms winning by 4 wickets, other than the mid innings collapse a well controlled performance to complete the double over our chums from Clent CC.
Man of the Match: Procter was up there but young Fred Fallows takes it for his 37 plus 1-10 and a run out.
Drops: None other than a Hunt avoidance.
