Old Griffs CC 181-2 in 20overs
|Match: Old Doms lost by 24 runs|
A disappointing defeat by 24 runs, mainly due to another lackluster first half fielding performance and not helped by the 'traditional' walk when you edge to the keeper that now seems to be missing from the game.
Old Griffs were the visitors and the Doms were testing out an orange ball. Not using an orange as a ball but the actual colour of the ball was orange! Chick tosses and the visitors skipper calls wrong and the Doms would bowl.
Ladha goes for 28 off two whilst Hazo bowls a tight 4 overs ending on 18-1. Should have been 2 but apparently its not the done thing to walk. The Doms have yet to get the opening overs right. 42 off the first 4 overs puts a lot of strain on the the rest of the bowlers coming on when the batsmen are set. Somehow we always think bowl the bowler through his four instead of one over and off and back later just to give the batsmen something to think about.
The fielding was patchy, Dolly as usual excelled. But to much fumbling and trying to stop balls by sticking a leg out. Stevie Martin came on and bowled two good overs out of 4. The 100 came up in the 13th over for the loss of one wicket. By the time Hodgy and Last came on the batsmen were set with 9 wickets in hand and the pair bowled 7 overs going at 10 and over.
The innings ended with the Griffs making a very good 181-2. Sattar a good 103 not out although marred by the 'non walking' moment when he had scored less than 10 runs. But that's cricket, full of individuals.
So the Doms needed 182 to win. Not a very good start as Chicken was unlucky as Dolly blasted a ball back and Nahim stuck a hand out to to stop the ball only to deflect it onto the stumps with Chick well out. At least he walked and didn't wait for the umpires finger to go up. 3-1 off one.
Hodgy and Dolly then got tucked into the bowling and the score raced onto 38 off 4 when Hodgy mistimed a pull and was easily caught for a brisk 27. Yarrington was then walking back without facing a ball, run out going for a run to Dolly's "NO". 38-3 off 5 overs.
The Griffs were now very chipper but Dolly and new boy Lack put on a useful partnership of 43 in 6 overs before Lack was bowled for 28. 101-5 off 14.
Stevie Martin then started to put some concern into the Griffs fielders as he hit a 11 ball 32 with two mighty sixes, sadly he went to a simple catch at square leg. Meanwhile Dolly had been striking the ball well mainly finding the fielders. The Griffs tactics was to put all the fielders on the boundaries which was a good ploy which made it difficult to keep enough boundaries ticking along. Dolly went in the 18th over for 39 leaving Hazo and Adie to try and get the Doms home. Sadly the damage was done early and the Doms fell 24 short. A good batting effort and with some luck the Doms may have reached the target.
Man of the Match - Tom Hickin for a good 39 and powerful fielding show.
