|Match: Old Doms won by 8wks|
Well on 7th September last season the Doms got a thrashing by 8wks down at Fladbury with Stokes hitting an unbeaten 96. The Doms now had a chance to reverse the outcome on the Hedges square on a very sunny and warm early September afternoon.
The Doms still missing some players but looked up for the afternoons challenge. Skipper Pedro tossed and the opposition decided to bat on a good looking track.
Danny Brookes bowled a tight first over very fast and accurate conceding a single run. Pedro bowling up hill gained immediate success McMoist chipping to Last at point and then in his second over snapped up the other opener when Dolly took a clean catch. The visitors were wobbling at 9-2 off 4.
Better was still to come, Stokes the match winner last year was on his way back after facing a couple of balls from Pedro after a smart stumping by Connor Adams. Stokes 0 and Fladbury 3-17. After 10 overs Brookes and Pedro were rested with the score on 4-24 following another sharp keeping catch off Danny Brookes in his 4th over.
Well if the Fladbury boys thought they could start to rebuild after the Doms opening pair of bowlers had been rested more of the same was to follow as Last's 4th ball trapped Clayton in front for 0 and in his next over bowled Sheppard and the visitors were reeling on 6-31 in 13th over.
Meanwhile Martin Brookes bowled tightly with only 1 run coming off the bat in his first three overs. Last got his third wicket when Fowler played back and the ball took out middle and leg off an edge. 48-7 turned into 56-8 as Martin Brookes had Geddis caught low down at first slip by Smaylen.
The tail wagged with Kath Adie coming off worst but picking up a wicket before Last took a sharp catch in the gully as Prudhoe slashed at a ball from Martin Brookes.
The visitors had gamely moved onto 124 all out with Folkard unbeaten on 20 in 37 overs. A great first half performance by the Doms, fielding was tight and the bowlers were well supported with only a very sharp chance being floored by Danny Brookes. The home players went off to tea with a skip in their steps..
And a good little tea it was, fresh free range egg sarnies, home made pasta fashioned by the culinary skills of Mike Smaylen...home made cake from Dolly (Fiona). A good end of season tea.
So earlier this season to Doms had failed to chase down a low score set by Castle Brom, could they do the business and sprint home to a big win?
Well talking of sprinting it was Davidge and Dolly striding out to try and get the Doms innings off to a flier. The team sighed with relief as they got the Doms off to the start they wanted. Both playing the bad ball well and picking up early boundaries. Moving along at 5 an over the first wicket came in the 9th over. Dolly playing an ambitious drive down the wrong line and was bowled by McCornish for 16 and the Doms were 1-39.
Davidge kept the score ticking along with Martin Brookes smacking the ball around until he played the same shot as Dolly with the same result, bowled by McCornish. However the Doms by this time were well on their way at 2-85 off 21. So another 40 needed off 19 overs and 8 wickets left, what possibly could go wrong?
Nothing really except Davidge got a long top edge 6. Yes Davidge hit a six, the only six hit in the whole match. Not many had a bet on that happening !
Well by now Davidge was creeping towards another 50 but a clinical Connor Adams hit 5 boundaries in an unbeaten 24 leaving Davidge on 47 not out and the Doms home and dry on 2-128 in the 27th over.
A great batting performance backing up the earlier work of the bowlers and fielders. A great way to end the Doms home games. The Doms now move onto two away games to conclude an interesting season.
Man of the Match -The whole 11 players. Real all round effort by the team when everything almost went right.
