Avoncroft CC 249-9 in 40 overs
|Match: Old Doms lost by 39 runs|
The penultimate game of a long season took the Doms off to Avoncroft a stones throw from the Doms home ground. A nice tidy little ground, small boundaries. The weather was good, so good that jumpers were not required.
Pedro lost the toss and the Doms were asked to bowl first on a good looking batting strip. With Danny Brookes bowling down hill and Pedro up. I've never understood why the youngsters get to bowl downhill, I'm thinking the buggers should get a sweat on and bowl uphill for a change. Brookes was soon into the wickets whenever he bowled straight sending Hislop, White (yes the Ed who played for the Doms at the end of last season, I wondered where he had disappeared to...) and Broad back to the pavilion with only 3 runs between them and in between Pedro picking up Wilks for a duck. The home side were struggling on 4-15 in 5th over.
But then the hosts started sending in their batsmen and the wickets dried up. Warwick and Pitt steadied the innings until a great piece of fielding by Pedro saw Pitt run out with a direct hit and the score was 5-58 in 15.
With the Doms strike bowlers rested Martin Brookes and Last took over and bowled through their 16 overs going unrewarded against Warwick and Inge but only conceding 64 runs. When they were replaced by Adie and Clarke the host were struggling to get a big score at 5-114 off 26 overs. Sadly the next 14 overs went for 135 runs, a tad shy of 10 runs an over. Jonny Clarke did pick up a couple of wickets, an excellent stumping and an even better catch deep on the boundary by Danny Brookes.
Warwick went onto get an undefeated 102, his 100 coming off the last over. A very good knock. The Doms fielding was good, just the one dropped catch, a difficult chance floored by Pedro and Chickin turning a 1 into a 4 through his legs.
So the Doms looking a bit shell shocked at the second half onslaught trudged off for tea and to listen to the Villa go two up.
So 250 to win, small ground but not the strongest looking batting line up the Doms have sent out. Chickin and Adie got off to a steady start with the 50 coming up in the 10th over. Sadly as has happened to many times this season Chickin was bowled after looking so comfortable and hitting the ball well. Lack of concentration? 1-55 of 12.
Adie and Brookes took the score on at the same pace until Adie missed one and was bowled for 18 in 17th over 2-76. Drinks came with the Doms on 2-102 still 148 needed. At the same point the hosts were 5-78.
With Adams and Brookes at the wicket a Doms victory looked on the cards but somehow Adams played a loose shot and was walking back for 22. The Doms 3-126 soon turned into 4-135 in 26th over as Smaylen played an outrageous shot and was bowled. Outrageous not in a good way, sloppy limp wristed attempt to hit the ball...
Stato and Brookes pushed on, but not quite quick enough as when Martin Brookes was bowled for a run a ball 63 the Doms had moved onto 5-173 in 33rd over still 77 needed off 7 overs. Much like the rate the hosts produced in their last ten overs.
Sadly and unsurprisingly Stato played a gloriously awful poke and was bowled for 19, 6-213 in the 39th over. Jonny Clarke had leathered the ball around and ended up with a 19 ball 23 not out whilst Danny Brookes was rightly adjudged LBW trying to play a reverse sweep off the final ball of the innings. He may need to look at Last's educational batting videos (sorry only available in BetaMax) to see how to play the reveres sweep.
So the Doms ended up 29 runs short of victory. Playing with only 10 men doesn't help and a 5th regular bowler was the key to the Doms failing to win. It was a good game played in the true spirit of the game in a nice setting. The Doms now head up to Ward End for the final match of the 2015 season next Sunday.
Man of the Match - The Brookes boys, Danny for 4wks and a great catch and Martin's 63 with a very sore finger !
Dropped catches: 1 - Pedro Running total 78
