Arden Royals CC 240-6 in 40overs
|Match: Old Doms lost by 38 runs|
Arden Royals were today's visitors, the first time the teams had met, another league team for the Doms to measure themselves against. The sun was trying to come through so jumpers were still a requirement. The pitch was perfect, hard with even bounce and the outfield as smooth as Jonners head, it looked like a high scoring game was to be played out. Pedro won the toss and decided to chase, now given the last two matches perhaps chasing was not a good idea !
Srini and Pedro started the game and the skill of the Royals opening pair was soon evident with Pedro's first ball going for a maximum and the first 4 overs going for a rapid 30 runs. After nine overs and with the score on 70 Pedro rung the changes and bought on the H boys to try and stem the runs.
Hazo's flighters did the trick and in his third over he bowled Ash for 25 and his flight and pace were always giving the batsmen problems, Hodgy ambling in downhill kept the batsmen keen. At drinks the visitors were 111-1.
The next wicket to fall was Usman easily caught by Srini for 29 of Hazo. Hazo's good set of overs going for 41-2. Hodgy's spell ending 44-0.
Pedro kept the pace off the ball from one end with Last and Brookes fizzers down hill. The Royals were now trying to up the pace with Rizzie hitting Last for a long six. But with Rizzi on 96 Last tempted the batsman forward and the bails were off in a flash, the batsman not waiting for the umpires decision. Great keeping by Adams.
Last then bowls Asif for 9 and finally picks up his forth wicket when Hodgy takes a very good catch. The Royals finish their innings on 240-6. About a par score for the wicket. The Doms bowlers did a good job in restricting some good Royals batsmen and were backed up by another good performance in the field. So 241 to win in 40 overs, given last weeks innings 119 in 42 overs 241 could be optimistic.
Tea was taken. A very good tea it was to. Not the best ever Doms tea but a good tea.
So Chick and Kath walk out together, not in a matrimonial way obvs, to start the run chase. Rizwan down the hill got up some speed and a deft cut by Chicken saw the Doms first boundary. Sadly 4 balls later and still in the first over Chicken tries the same shot but this time the visitors had put a fielder in position to take an easy catch. Doms 1-11.
14 runs were added, Adie and Hodgy were looking untroubled when Kath was bowled and the Doms had progressed to 25-2 off only 3 overs. The run rate continued to skip long at a good pace and all was looking good for the Doms run chase. Until the 10th over when somehow Hodgy failed again, mistimed drive and caught a deep mid off for a breezy 25 off 23 balls. Still it was only 3 wks down for 66.
Sadly the next ten overs saw the Doms loose 5 wickets for a miserly 41 runs. Brookes out for a good 38 and Pedro 11. So 114-8, such a disappointing period of cricket on a very good batting surface against a bowling line up which was non to challenging.
Last joined Adams and started to try and grind out some runs to make the score look respectable. They played some shots and frustrated the visitors not giving a chance in the 13 overs of the partnership. That is until Last drove at the returning Rizwan and mistimed a drive and was caught for a rearguard 12. 9-162, a partnership of 41 for the 9th wicket. But all was not lost Hazo joined Adams and kept the score board turning over for the final 7 overs.
Although it was clear that the Doms would loose there was tension right up to the last ball of the match as Adams neared his 50. 1 run needed off the last ball and Adams flicked the ball and raced through for 2 runs to take him to a well deserved chanceless 51 not out. Still not 15 until July he becomes the youngest ever Doms player to score a 50. A great knock with proper cricket shots. But we shouldn't forget Hazo's support in keeping Adams on track with his own great knock of 19 not out.
The final 20 overs saw the Doms tail wag with a combined score of 1-88, the tenth wicket partnership of 40 fell 5 runs short of the Doms all time record of 45 shared by Dolly and Last in 2009.
A disappointing result as it was a game the Doms should have won against a very useful Royals. The bowling was good together with a very good fielding performance. All that was needed was a better performance with the bat.
Man of the Match - Connor Adams for his maiden 51 no and clean keeping.
