Old Moseley Arms CC 138-8 in 40overs
|Match: Old Doms won by 4 wks|
Well here we are again, the 2014 season is upon us and what a cracking day to start the season. Bright sunshine, not to chilly and a team eager to get the season rolling. Today visitors were Old Mose, nice bunch of lads.
The Doms team lacked teachers, Pedro and Tank 'away' with children. Sammy Moore back after 18 months sidelined with injuries and new recruit the emerald John Dawson.
Hodgy won the toss and decided to bowl first on a bowler friendly looking track. With the first ball of the season Srini steamed in the ball dug in and it took the edge and stand in keeper Davidge snaffled the ball. What a great start. The visitors dug in and showed the pitch the respect it deserved. Srini and Dan Brooks were difficult to get away and the fielding was top drawer stuff. Srini was rested after five overs but young Brookes powered through his picking up two wickets in his spell of 2-21.
Hodgy took the ball for one over but was so awful (blamed a shoulder injury) his spell lasted 6 balls. New recruit Dawson took over and was soon into his stride bowing a tight line. At 20 over the vistors had about 42 runs on the board.
Last was now bowling uphill on a track that if the ball was in the right place was going to be hard to get away. Dawson took is maiden wicket by bowling opener Howarth for 13. The visitors were really finding runs hard to come by against the pairing of Dawson and Last. Their 16 overs costing a miserly 35 runs. Dawson 1-21 and Last 1-14. Lasts first 33 balls were bowled to the same batsman.
Moseley tried to up the rate and lost wickets at regular intervals. They ended their 40 over inings on 138-8. Its might just be enough if they bowled well.
Tea was taken - Not a good opening days tea, 6/10 is being generous. Nothing more will be said, but...
So 139 to win and with some big hitters in the line up it could be over soon if the batsmen did not let the wicket dictate their stroke play. Moore and Davidge opened and although the ball was unpredictable both looked at ease. Well Moore cracked a big 6 before a ball stopped on him and the ball fell off his bat onto his boot with just enough weight to knock the bail off. Doms 1-14 in the 5th over.
Skipper Hodgy came in and the score raced along 6 fours and two big sixes from Hodgy took the score onto 72 before he was bowled for 41 in the 15th over. The Doms stuttered a bit but Srini and Martin Brookes took the game away from the visitors with a 32 run un beaten partnership. The Doms winning by 4 wickets and with 9 overs to spare.
A good start for the Doms, fielding very sharp and bowling looked good. A god team performance let down by a mediocre tea.
Player of the Match - Tough call but Hodgy's 41 runs in a low scoring match was the winner.
Dropped Catches: Moor-1 Brooks M -1 Davidge-1
