Old Moseley Arms CC 177-8 in 40 overs
|Match: Old Doms lost by 23 runs|
Another sunny but cold match day. Our old chums from Moseley were the visitors, a tough game is the norm for this fixture and today's was another good match. The Doms would field first.
Srini and Pedro opened the attack but it was soon clear that the conditions were not making it easy to control the swing of the ball. Srini so accurate last week was particularly troubled and never got his line quite right often enough. The ball going down the leg side to often. Although it did stop the batsmen getting runs off the bat. Pedro coming up the hill was more controlled but again his good spell went unrewarded. Srin off after five overs 0-15 and Pedro 0-8 off five.
The Doms were fieding three new players, Matt Smaylen, Tank Perry's little cousin and the young Johnson twins Ben and Sam - both 12 and doing very well in the Bromsgrove Academy. Ben was given his chance to bowl his first overs for the Doms... and what a great spell he had. He bowled down the hill and reeled off five excellent overs. In his third over he got his first wicket for the Doms trapping the batsman plumb in front. Bens five over spell went for 1-5 including two maidens.
At the other end Colin Hunt was steaming in and got two wickets bowling both the openers. In the 19th over a silly mix up saw the Doms get their 3 wk a run out. At the halfway mark the visitors were 65-4.
Sam Johnson was also given his chance with the ball, another great action, slow breakers. After getter his length right he was into the grove making the batsmen play with caution. In his second over the drew the batsman forward and a good stumping was made by Chickin.
Ben bowled out his first overs for the Doms 5-0-21-1.
The Old Mose continued to eke out runs and eventually their innings closed on 177-8.
Tea was taken.. it was pleasing to see some improvement.
The skies were now becoming more overcast and with that the chill factor dropped.. would the Doms chase down the 178 needed?
Well with a weakened batting line up the third over saw one of the Doms stronger batters Perry leaving the field for one run, leading edge to a ball that stopped on him. Doms 1-4. Srini looking to play a long innings was undone by a grubber. Doms 2-8 which became 3-21 when debutant Smaylen was needlessly run out.
Eight overs gone and the Doms on 3-21.. not a solid start. Chicken joined Davidge and started repairing the early the damage and things were looking good for the Doms. But sadly Chickin was squared up after a brisk 17 runs. Doms 4-44. The game moved on with Pedro and the watchful Davidge moving the score onto 71 after 20 overs.
Pedro was playing a Captains innings, pushing the score along with some gusto but with the score on 107 he was bowled for a very good 36 runs. So 78 needed off 12 overs it was game on. But Piper collected another duck and the tail was exposed.
A brief 33 run 7th wicket partnership ended in the 38th over and the Doms innings was ended being 24 runs short.
Handshakes all round, mainly to get warm. The Doms again had fallen short, only Davidge 34no Pedro and Chickin batted well, the lack of batting form lost Doms the game. The fielding and bowling were good with only a few errors. The Johnson twins had a good debut for the Doms, both bowling good spells and very clean when fielding. Two good lads.
The Doms now move on to the next games against Sportman CC, a win predicted for the Doms.
Man of the Match: the Johnson boys for two good bowling spells .
Dropped Catches: The Guardsman - 1 Running total: 1
