Catches win matches some say, not the case for this match. Decisions can also affect the result and maybe the Doms were on the wrong end of some today. First time the Doms have visited the Lemmings home patch. Nice little ground somewhere near the centre of this lovely Spa town. The Doms welcomed Ananda for his first match and Chickin was celebrating his birthday. Pedro won the toss and decided to bat on a worn wicket but it played true and was of no help to any of the bowlers on either side.
Birthday boy Chickin and Mike D opened and Davidge was off to a blistering start hitting 9 off the first over he faced. Runs then eased up a bit as the bowlers found their length and lines. and at the 10 over mark the score was 45 without loss. Sadly in the next over Davidge got a snorter of a delivery and was bowled through the gate for 23. It was really the only decent ball Tew bowled in his 8 overs as the ball was splayed around. 46-1.
Srini, in at number three never really got going although he did get a sweet six before a ball held up and he played to soon giving and easy catch to the bowler. 104-2 off 21 overs. Then we had a very good Hickin partnership. Dolly came in and after his usual prodding and missing was off and running and as a pair the Hicking boys pushed the score along. Dolly however was out when looking good for a 50 plus score when he was bowled by the returning Brown. 181-3.
Pete Boynton made a brief cameo of 5 runs off six balls faced and it was left to Chickin and new boy Ananda to set a defendable score. Ananda finished on 23 not out and Chickin 90, perhaps the birthday boy should have pressed on and chanced his arm more in the latter part of his innings as some big hitters were padded up, as it was he was left tantalisingly close to his maiden 100.
The Doms innings ended on 232-4 may there was another 30 runs available if the push had been sooner.
Tea was taken. Not the worst tea the Doms had been served up but not the best tea either. Seems that the sarnies were made the day before maybe?
So 232 to defend and the Doms were off to a flier, Srini bowling Tew first ball and with Pedro giving Davidge his first keepers catch the Doms were on top with the hosts 21-2 off 5. Things got better for the Doms when the dangerous Bournet was bowled by Colin Hunt. Leemings in a spot of bother at 59-3 off 12.
The the partnership that won the game for the hosts, Richardson playing well started to strike the ball well and the score was moving along and keeping pace with the run rate and at the 20 mover drinks the score was 101-3. Patel was the other batsman who struggled early on and found it hard to get the ball off the square. The Doms needed a wicket and the home side need to up the pace. With this scenario risks were being taken and on another day a Patel would have been easily run out twice but somehow the umpires saw things differently and made their decisions.
The Doms plugged away and Richardson was playing a blinder never giving a chance and finding the gaps to keep the Leemings just ahead of the rate required. We then had a Stewart Broad moment, the hapless Patel edges to the keeper, catch taken, Doms pleased. Patel stand his ground, the umpire looks bemused and his finger stays down. Headshaking moment.
That seem to take the fight out of the Doms and and Richardson passed the 100 mark and somehow got himself out when in sight of carrying his bat for 127. The host got home with a couple of overs to spare. A good game in many respects with very good knocks from Richardson and the two Hickin boys, the bowlers from both sides toiled without much luck. Decisions can affect the result. The teams shook hands and went for a drink.
